SUMMARY Jehbender- zade Filibeli Ahmed Hilmi and Spiritualism This Study covers the spiritualistic ideas of Ahmed Hilmi against the ideas originating in the philosophy of the Enlightenment positivistic and materialistic thinking intiated during Tanzimat in Turkey. This work is divided into four chapters. It begins with introduction which is the preliminary approach to the ideas of Ahmed Hilmi and seriously an expose of Western philosophies pringing upon scientific and philosophical thoughts in Turkey. The second Part looks at the socio-economic structure, political events and religious atmosphere prevailing around him. So we can understand the external and internal forces and sources impringing upon Ahmet Hilmi, and then impelled him to develop a distinguishable world view. On the other hand, Political and intellectual thoughts related to Ottomanism, Islamism and Nationalism prevailing in the time of Ahmet Hilmi and his thoughts were examined in a comparable and scientific way. This part also deals with Ahmet Hilmi's scientific, philosophical and religious ideas in the light of his philosophical system. At the same time in this part we try to show his views and discussions on the philosophical schools such as criticism, positivism, evolutionism and materialism in a critical manner. The third one comprices metaphysical thoughts which are produced in a spiritualistic manner by Ahmet Hilmi. These metaphysical principles are God, Universe, Spirit and Free Will. While these pirinciples are compared with Western spiritualistic thoughts by Ahmet Hilmi at the same time Western spiritualism is occasionally criticised. These principles are based on Islamic thoughts related to human existence as God's designated vicegerent is in need of God. Human existence has a free will, this freedom is considered within God's creative activitiy, by virtue of being created in the divine image and manifesting the Spirit and given responsibility over himself.
