?97- SUMMARY In this thesis, the bacteriology of dental air-water syringes and municipal water were examined to determine the Legionella species, total bacteria levels and chlorine levels in 71 dental offices in Ankara. % 27 of water samples which were taken from dental units in dental office were not suitable for human consumption which was passed over the level of 200 cfu/ml. On the other hand, these level was found at % 13 in municipal water lines. As a result of using culture method to determine Legionella species, none of the analised 71 dental unit water samples was found Legionella sp. Only one of 71 municipal water sample was contained Legionella pneumophila SG 3. Its colonisation level was found 4 cfii/ml. In PCR and DFA methods which are used as auxiliary techniques, no Legionella species were obtained in all water samples. Data of the injuries showed that age of the dentist had reverse ratio with plaque value of unit water samples. In addition, there was no differences in plaque counting values between the floors of the apartments. When the chlorine levels of the investigated water were increased, the plaque counting values of units and municipal water were decreased. Central heating systems got more contaminated water than local heating systems. But there was no difference in plaque counting98- values between import and native units. In addition, when the age of the unit increased, the plaque counting values were increased. In the low social- economical level regions water had more contaminated than other regions.
