Özet (Çeviri)
ABSTRACT This study has been made in order to investigate the reflection of America as, a whole in Norman Mailer's works. The focus of this study has been on his works rather than his life, because it has been explored widely and repeatedly. His most famous and most important works have been studied according to their chronological order. Those having relatively less importance have been studied under the title of other works which have some points in common or which are worthy of comparison. The chapters which carry the names of the books by the writer include brief information about the plot, the writer's approach for, and comments on, the work, some criticisms, and the explanation about the characters. In the first chapter a general review of Norman Mailer's works has been made. Here, his patience and determination have been discussed. The Naked and the Dead is the chapter in which America, American society and mentality have been searched and argued. Mailer's descriptions of the feelings of the soldiers, and the island which is the main setting of the events, have been viewed thoroughly in this part. Moreover Mailer's self-criticism also has been given from time to time. Barbary Shore has been examined with an approachstressing on experimantal ism in Mailer's works and in American society. In the chapter entitled The Deer Park the natural and unnatural aspects of the events and characters have been studied being compared with the similar examples in the real American life. In the chapter“Why Are We in Vietnam”the reaction of some Americans who were angry about America's interference in Vietnam War has been pictured. Also the quick transformation in American society has been observed.“Advertisements for Myself”is about the commentaries on Mailer by himself and by other critics. Since that work is a self-criticism, the conclusions have been reached mainly under the influence of the views of the author. In the so-called presidential papers, politics in America has been inquired. Because of being written very soon after An American Dream and therefore being overshadowed by it, Cannibal s and Christians has not been discussed in detai 1. It has been the last chapter in which Mailer's art and style have been closely examined and the spirit of America searched for. Without being eliminated all aspects of Mailer's works have been shortly discussed and the conclusion has been put forward: Norman Mailer, The Hemingway of his time, is perhaps the most outstanding figure of today's America because he travelled to the remote corners of American life.
