Key words : Railway Vehicles, Dynamic Analysis, Finite Element Method, Railway Deformation, Vibration Comfort. TVS 2000 is the last generation passenger coach developed by TÜVASAŞ. This model is composed of two parts: the body and the bogie (running gear). The body of the coach is around 30 tons. Each bogie weighs 6 tons which brings up the total weight of bogies to 12 tons. In order to compete with land transportation, railways have to provide fast and comfortable travel. To improve on speed and comfort requires that design as well as infrastructure issues to be considered together. The study initially researched the works done on the subject of the dynamic behaviour of the coach and the effect of vibration on passenger comfort. It was observed that, in previous studies 'rigit mass numeric models' have been used. The studies using 'elastic numeric models' were limited in the sense that they applied on bogie and body seperately. In this respect it was decided that for TVS 2000, elastic numerical models, considering the coach and bogies as a whole should be employed and calculations should be done accordingly. There are many factors affecting the dynamic characteristics of TVS 2000 passenger coach. These can be listed as: Raiload faults, rail elasticity, wheelset manufacturing deficiencies, rail joints, rail deformation and effects among coaches. Since the effects of these factors are quite different in nature, determining a common numerical expression was not possible. In this regard, this study focused on the effect of rail deformation on passenger comfort. The body of TVS 2000 passenger coach and Y32 bogie was used in the study. At first, the body of passenger coach was modeled by surface modeling technique, whereas solid modeling techniques were employed for Y32 bogie. The geometric models formed were then transformed to numeric models using finite element method for dynamic solutions. The natural frequency calculations, vibration shapes and frequencies were derivated both for body and bogie seperately. This enabled the analysis of effects among the subassemblies of the coach. Then vibration shapes and frequencies of the coach as a whole (body and bogies) were calculated using the natural frequencies. It was found that all vibration forms were influenced by the body rather than the bogies. The developed finite element model was used in calculating the natural frequencies, with and without of the damp effect taken into consideration. Actual acceleration measurements were made on the coach at certain points and velocities. Acceleration - frequency graphics are obtained. Finally, experimental and numerical values of comfort are compared to determine the effect of rail deformation on vibration comfort. xvi
