-V- ABSTRACT SOLID-LIQUID MASS TRANSFER AND CONTACTING EFFICIENCY IN TRICKLE BED REACTORS This study was prepared as a M.S. Thesis with the supervision of Asst.Prof.Dr. Ahmet BİÇER in Institute of Science and Technology of Gazi University in Chemical Engineering Department by Ismail DAL in 1987. In trickle bed reactors, solid-liquid mass transfer and contacting efficiency are two important parameters for the planning of this kind of reactors. In this study, the effects of gas, liquid flow rates and the size of packing on these parameters were investigated. For this purpose, it was studied in film -like flow regime using two different size (7.36 x 6.00 mm and 10.0 x 7.92 mm) of cylindrical packing in the range of 2 liquid flow rates 0.236-5.603 kg/m.s, and of gas 2 flow rates 0.0-0.332 kg/m.s. Solid-liquid mass transfer coefficients were determined by the dissolution of benzorc acid cylinders in the water. Mass transfer coefficients were calculated as k a since s s the wetting is partial at low flow rates. The results were given as a correlation involving Sherwood (Sh), Schmidt (Sc) and Reynolds (Re) numbers.-VI- Solid-liquid mass transfer area, a, was determined by a chemical method (the hydrolysis of phthalic anhydride cylinders in K2C03-KHC03 buffer solution). The ratio of this area to geometrical area, f, was correlated as a function of Weber (We), Froude (Fr) and Reynolds (Re) numbers.
