INVESTIGATING the PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT and DESIGN CAPACITY of the TURKISH MEDICAL DEVICE SECTOR by CASE STUDIES SUMMARY Since prehistoric ages, human beings have been practising internal and external medical applications with their survival instincts. First medical operations have been seen in 10000 BC. However, the modern medical era had begun in the late 19th century. In this century, inventions of the medical devices such as thermometer, x- ray and electrocardiography devices have supported the appearance and the development of the modern medical practices. In the following time period, medical science and medical devices have progressed in parallel in a very fast pace. Today, medical device industry has become one of the biggest industries in the world. As the average human lifetime has increased as a result of technological innovations and developments in medical research, the costs of the medical care has also increased. Governments as the major suppliers of medical care try to solve this problem. The increase in the average human lifetime also causes an increase in the use of medical devices in people's daily lives. It is expected that the medical device sector will continue to grow at a rapid pace in the future. The critical importance of the medical devices in surviving the human life was appeared controlling and standardising this products. The critical importance of medical devices in life saving necessities their control and compliance to certain standards. Since the 1970s the USA and the EU has created directives to guide the production of medical devices. They are followed by other countries with their own directives, standards, control and supervising systems. Being late in the development of its national directives and its medical device sector, Turkey has only completed the adoption process of its own directives to the EU Directive relating to the medical device sector in 2003. Turkey's need for medical devices is mainly met by imported products. The number of medical device producers is less than 1 50 in Turkey. Most of the production is in the area of low risk and relatively inexpensive products. Therefore, a great proportion of the need for medical devices is met by imported products creating a heavy cost burden. However, in the last years, the industry has been developing and the number of producers has increased. The government supports the companies that are willing to operate in this sector. XIIIBecause of their direct relations to human life, the design process of the medical devices has different features and their design and production requirements are regulated by various directives. The leading medical device producers in the World make huge R&D investments. The global competition in this sector requires the producers provide function with aesthetically pleasing products, being a showcase for the huge R&D investments behind them. There are many successful product examples in the developed countries. In this study, the state, product development and design capacities of the medical device production companies operating in Turkey has been investigated by using the case study method. By focusing on the design process of a specific product of a different class type from each company, the thesis investigated the product development and design capacities of three Turkish medical device producing companies. It has been found out that direction of the product development and design development activities of these companies is to substitute the imported products. The companies investigated do not develop products from scratch and they do not perform innovative product development activities. However, through their efforts of product differentiation, they develop their product development and design capacities. To gain a competitive advantage in the medium and long runs, it is imperative that the Turkish medical device producers need to develop products with export capacity to the developed countries of higher levels of complexity. xiv
