Atatürk lkeleri ve nkılap Tarihi Enstitüsü'nde Yüksek Lisans Derecesi içinPınar Farımaz tarafından Eylül 2006'da teslim edilen tezin kısa özetiBaşlık: ?Hegemonik Erkekliğin Yeniden nşası:? Erkekçe Üzerinden birAnaliz, 1981-1990Bu tez, ?hegemonik erkekliğin?1980ler'de nasıl yeniden inşa edildiğini özellikle onyılın ekonomik ve kültürel atmosferine odaklanarak betimlemeye çalışmaktadır.1980ler'i bu tez için uygun bir zemin olarak belirlemedeki vazgeçilmez nedenkesinlikle ?sosyal değişim? nosyonunun ardında yatar ki bu nosyonun sosyal kodlar(ahlak, kültür ve organizasyonlar) ve sosyal figürler (kadın ve erkek imgesi, kadınlıkve erkeklik imgesi ve elbette bu imge ve algılara ilişkin idealler) üzerindeki etkisi birerkeklik çalışması ortaya koymak açısından kıymetli bir kaynaktır. Kısacası1980ler'in sosyo-ekonomik yapısının- belki Türkiye'de liberal ekonomik atılımlarıngerçekleştirildiği önceki yıllara kıyasla kesin bir kopuş izlenimi vermez,?kapitalizmin global zaferi? ile birlikte düşünüldüğünde, sosyal düzen ve dolayısıyla?toplumsal cinsiyet,? ?kimlik? ve ?yaşam biçimi? meseleleri üzerine çarpıcı bir etkisiolmuştur. Tam da bu nokta 1980ler'in bu erkeklik çalışması için neden temel birçerçeve olarak tercih edildiğini vurgular, bununla beraber benim başlıca amacımdünyayı çepeçevre saran neo-liberal söylemin toplumsal cinsiyet ilişkilerindedramatik bir dönüşüme yol açtığını iddia etmek değil aksine toplumsal cinsiyetilişkilerinin veya çok zamandır belirgin bir doğrultuda (homofobi ve kadınınikincilliği) sürüp giden ?cinsel politikaların? neo-liberal söylem içinde bir başkakertede yeniden üretildiği hususunda ısrarcı olmaktır. Bu noktada, tez boyuca savımıdesteklemek için basın, ?ikna? sürecinde başvurulan önemli bir hegemonyaoluşturma mekanizması olarak ele alınacaktır. Bununla beraber, hegemonyaoluşturma mekanizması dışında basının özellikle Erkekçe'nin bir betimlemesi dahayani ?populer kültür? ağı şeklindeki tanımı sıkça kullanılacaktır. Buna ilavetenErkekçe, 1980ler'de popüler kültürün önemli bir parçası olarak ya da ?rıza?yaratmada önemli bir ?ikna? mekanizması olarak tez boyunca öncelikli bir pozisyonasahip olacaktır bilhassa hegemonik erkekliğin 19080ler'de neo-liberal söylem içindenasıl yeniden inşa edildiğini detaylarıyla incelerken.

An Abstract of the Thesis of Pınar Farımaz for the degree of Master of Arts from theAtatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History to be taken September 2006Title: The Reconstruction of ?Hegemonic Masculinity:? An Analysisthrough Erkekçe, 1981-1990This thesis strives to delineate how ?hegemonic masculinity? was reconstructed inthe 1980s, especially through focusing on the economic and cultural atmosphere ofthe decade. The indispensable motive in designating the 1980s as a proper ground forthis thesis lies precisely behind the notion of ?social alteration? on account that itsimpacts on the social codes (morality, culture, and organizations) and on socialfigures (the image of woman and man, the perception of masculinity and femininity,and for sure, ideals concerning these images and perceptions) are precious sources interms of putting forth a masculinity study for consideration. In brief, the ?socio-economic structure? of the 1980s- maybe it does not give the appearance of anindisputable rupture in comparison with the previous years in which a liberaleconomic leap was materialized in Turkey, when it is considered together with the?global triumph of capitalism,? had a conspicuous influence on the socialconfiguration, in this connection, on the issues of ?gender,? ?identity,? and?lifestyle.? Here it is why the 1980s were preferred as a case for this masculinitystudy; however, my main purpose is not to claim that the neo-liberal discoursespreading throughout the world contributed to a dramatic transformation in genderrelations, but rather to insist that gender relations or ?sexual politics,? which havepersisted in a certain way (homophobia and subordination of woman) for a long time,were reproduced in a different state within the discourse of neo-liberalism. At thispoint, to support my argument, throughout the thesis, the press will be regarded as animportant mechanism of establishing hegemony to which is applied in the process of?persuasion.? However, apart from the mechanism of establishing hegemony, onemore definition of the press, especially of Erkekçe will be employed in the thesis; itis the network of ?popular culture.? In this manner, Erkekçe, as an important part ofpopular culture in the 1980s or as an important ?persuasion? mechanism in creatingthe ?consent,? will have the privileged position throughout this thesis, especiallywhile elaborating on how hegemonic masculinity was reconstructed in the 1980swithin the neo-liberal discourse.
