ABSTRACTECONOMICS DEPARTMENTSUPERMARKETS IN THE MARKET SYSTEM: THE ECONOMIC EFFECTSOF CONCENTRATION IN RETAIL TRADEVolkan Gürsel(Master Degree Thesis)The business of retailing has been going through dramatic change. Amongst allthe areas of retailing, it is food retailing which stands out as having seen the mostprofound changes. In the last century have occurred considerable changes in foodretailing across most developed countries with the emergence of new store formats, theincreased prevalence of retail chains, and significant investment in new technology andimproved logistics. At the same time, the sector has seen the rise of giant corporationscontrolling significant proportions of overall domestic retail sales and there has beensignificant consolidation in retail distribution. On the other hand the emergence ofglobally operating retail groups and the global spread of the supermarkets have beentransforming retailing in developing countries. The supermarkets in Turkey havedeveloped rapidly since the 1980?s with significant changes both in economic and socialstructures. We see that this process and its consequences have potentially profoundeffects on the host country?s economy.
