Improving the nurses?quality of worklife is important for preventing the turnover of qualified nurses,promoting the patient care quality and organizational productivity. This study hadbeen carried out to investigate the opinions of nurses about their quality of worklifeand related factors. The hospitals with 500 and above bed capacity, in three groupsof affiliation were randomly selected from the list of 2002 Health OrganizationsAnnual Report of Ministry of Health within the Ankara Municipality. Then nurseswere selected randomly within the each group of hospitals. Data was collected witha 5 Likert Scale Questionnaire, prepared in two parts by the investigator, of whichfirst part consisted of general information about nurses and second part consisted of31 items, which reflected the nurses? opinions about quality of worklife and relatedfactors in their hospitals. Questionnaire was administered to nurses by theinvestigator herself in hospitals, and analysis was done only the ones returned inthe same day. To analyze the data Mean, standard deviation, percentages, Chi-Square, Kruskal Wallis test, Mann Whitney U test and Fisher?s chi- square wereused. Findings showed that %62.3 of nurses (N=271) evaluated their worklife asgenerally ?good?. Nurses (n=192) in university hospitals evaluated quality ofworklife as ?good? (%67.2), which was higher than nurses (n=38) in governmenthospitals (%50.0) and nurses (n=41) in social security institution hospitals (%51.2)(p=0.038). Nurses (%39.6), who evaluate the quality of worklife as ?good? thoughtthat they might stay 6 and more years at hospitals they work in. On the other handalmost one third of the nurses, who evaluate their quality of worklife as ?bad? (%37.7) thought that they might leave the hospital they work within a year. Resultssuggested that especially for the Ministry of Health, and Social security institutionaffiliated hospitals, it is necessary to organize a work environment to develop thequality of worklife for nurses, to set selection standards for nursing managers whoseresponsible for positive work environment and to provide educational opportunitiesfor improvement in order to increase nurses? quality of worklife.
