Ill ABSTRACT The life styles of the Turkish female consumer and the life style differences between upper, middle and lower social classes were explored in structured personal interviews with 500 housewives living in Istanbul, 100 of whom were working women. The dimensions covered were activities, interests and opinions, demographic characteristics, media and product usership and possession of household durable goods. The results draw a rather home, family, child centered portrait of the female consumer whose life style seems to be guided by traditional roles and conservative lines of thinking; yet, there are implications of an urge for change. The results also indicate significant differences in the life styles of different social classes, the widest gap being between the upper and lower social classes.
