NEOGENE STRATIGRAPHY AND TECTONICS OF ORHANİYE ANDSURROUNDING REGIONS (NNW ANKARA-TURKEY)Moosarreza TOORIABSTRACTThe study area is located in the south east of Kazan (Ankara) region in betweenOrhaniye and Güvenç villages and forms Neogene Quaternary units whichoverlay a Mesozoic fore-arc sedimentary basin. The main purpose is to study thepost-Miocene deformational history of the southeast corner of the Galatianregion.In the region two main rock units are exposed, which are 1) early-middle MioceneMaltepe formation. 2) Pliocene (?) Etimesgut formation. Maltepe formationconsists of clastics at the lower part and is overlain by a series of marl, tuff,cherty limestone sediments and coeval basaltic lava. The sedimentation in thebasin is intensively affected by the volcanic activity in the Galatian VolcanicRegion. In the region the Maltepe formation is unconformably overlain by basicfluvial clastic rocks of the Etimesgut formation.The deformational study is based on the data collection of bedding, fault andsurficial joint and fracture pattern. A sum of total 329 dip/strike readings weremeasured, out of which 102 from pre-Neogene and 227 from Neogene unitswere taken. From structural analysis it is observed that the strike value of the foldaxes in pre-Neogene units is N51°E were changed to N39°E in the Neogene rockunits.A sum of total 366 slip data was collected in the from faulted rocks. Stressanalysis has been applied by interpreting this data through Angelier's directinversion method. According to the structural stress analysis and fieldobsevations various improvements in structural phases has been suggested.Sedimentation of lower-middle Miocene Maltepe formation is accompanied bybasaltic lava flow. This region shows the dominance of active extensional phaseduring the sedimentation. However following the sedimentation in area, dominantcompressional phase has started and according to the analysis, first N-Scompression , NW-SE and then NE- SW compression was observed.
