ÖZETBir İşaret Olarak Türk Milli Kimliğinin Arap ?Öteki?nin Söylemsel PerformanslarıYoluyla Yeniden Kurulması: Batmanlı Araplar ÖrneğiSüheyla Nil MoustafaBu tez Batman'da yaşayan Arapların kültürel kimliklerinin incelenmesi ve Araptoplumsal kimliğinin Türk milli kimliği ile birleşmesinin incelenmesi yoluyla millikimlik kavramının daha detaylı bir açıklamasını sağlamayı hedeflemektedir.Millet ve milliyetçilik konularında hakim teoriler olan modernist ve etno-sembolist teorilerinin sunduğu milli kimlik kavramı, Batmanlı Arapların etnoğrafikincelemesi sonucunda elde edilmiş olan yeni bilgiler ışığında eleştirilmektedir. Etno-sembolist ve modernistlerin milli kimlik düşüncelerinin aksine, milli kimlik çalışmasınayapısalcı sonrası söylem teorileri tanıtılarak milli kimliğin daha yetkin analizinisağlayacak yeni bir kavramsal çerçeve oluşturulmuştur.Bu kavramsal çerçeve yoluyla milli kimliğin muğlak, değişken, melez ve çokluolarak tanımlanabilecek bir anlamlandırma süreci ya da bir işaret olduğu önesürülmüştür. Milli kimliğin inşa edilmiş olduğu yönündeki modernist düşünce kabuledilmesine rağmen, modernist bakış açısı karşısında şu iddia edilmiştir: ?Yurttaşlar?sadece millet tahayyülünün nesneleri değil, aynı zamanda milleti tahayyül edenöznelerdir. ?Yurttaşlar? milli kimliği edinirken millet tahayyülünü ve milli kimliğikendilerine özgü şekilde ve ait oldukları toplulukların kültürel kimlikleri çerçevesindebiçimlendirmektedirler. Böylelikle milli kimlik bir yandan milleti kurma görevini yerinevgetirirken diğer yandan da milletin farklı zaman ve mekanlarında ?yurttaşlarca?kurulmaktadır.Bu çalışma öncelikle Arap toplumunun sosyal tahayyülünü üyelerin toplumutanımlamaları üzerinden incelemekte ve Arap toplumsal kimliğinin unsurlarınıbelirtmektedir. Milli kimliğin muğlak, melez ve değişken yapısı Arapların Türk millianlatıları, kendi toplumsal kimliklerini Türk milli kimliğinin tanımına ekleyerek tekraranlatmalarının incelenmesi yoluyla gösterilmektedir.vi

ABSTRACTRe-Articulation of the Sign of Turkish National Identity through the DiscursivePerformances of the Arab ?Other?: The Case of Arabs in BatmanbySüheyla Nil MoustafaThis thesis aims to provide an elaborated understanding of the concept of nationalidentity through an exploration of the cultural identities of the Arab community inBatman and the consolidation of the Arab communal identity with the Turkish nationalidentity.Concepts of national identity which are proposed by the dominant theories ofnation and nationalism, that is, ethno-symbolist and modernist theories of nation andnationalism are criticized in terms of the evidence provided by the ethnographic study ofArabs in Batman. In contrast to the ethno-symbolist and modernist understanding of theconcept of national identity, a new conceptual framework which provides a complexanalysis of national identity is established by the introduction of post-structuralisttheories of discourse into the study of national identity.Following this framework it is claimed that national identity is a process ofsignification or a sign which is unstable, shifting, hybrid and multiple. Although themodernist argument, that is, national identity is constructed is accepted, it is claimedagainst the modernist viewpoint that ?nationals? are not only the objects of theimagination of nation but they are at the same time the subjects who imagine the nation.As they appropriate the national identity, ?nationals? themselves tailor the imaginationof nation and national identity in their own ways with respect to the cultural identities ofiiitheir communities. Hence national identity has the function of constructing the nation,while it is also being constructed by the ?nationals? in different times and localities ofthe nation.The study analyzes social imaginary of the Arab community in terms of thedefinitions of the Arab community by the members of the community and outlines theelements of the Arab communal identity. The unstable, hybrid and shifting nature ofnational identity is illustrated through the analyses of the renarrations of the Turkishnational narratives by the Arabs with their inclusion of the Arab identity into thedefinition of Turkish national identity.iv
