Özet (Çeviri)
This thesis is a rereading of two novels, by a Turkish and an Uruguayan female writer both exiled in the same year, which came to be perceived as national feminist narratives by critiques, as queer textualities. Within this framework, Franco Moretti's coinage peripheral literatures, which includes both Latin America and Turkey, is used as a geographical comparison ground and Sevgi Soysal's Tante Rosa (1968) and Cristina Peri Rossi's La nave de los locos (Ship of Fools, 1984) are analyzed side by side, within a comparative framework and via queer perspective, considering Turkish and Spanish's semantic ground. The work has two purposes: to open up the meanings of queerness in Turkish whose absence is still tangibly felt within the academic spheres in Turkey; besides, contributing to the fast-emerging Latin American Studies in Turkey with a comparative literary perspective. In the first chapter, queer's theoretical emergence and its entrance into academy corresponding to the early nineties is tackled. Taking on from Judith Butler's proposal that“we should let queer take on meanings”(1993: 228), the current and ossified understandings of queerness within today's academy are tried to be“queered from their prior usage and in the direction of urgent and expanding political purposes”(ibid.) with the views of some queer theorists and their views. Some of these are early queer theorists like Michael Warner, Cherry Smith, Lee Edelman, David Halperin and Nikki Sullivan. It is argued that queer emerged as a political“doing”, unlikely to its current usages as a name or an adjective that fashions one with a nameable identity. Within this framework, the term assemblage, used by Deleuze ve Guattari'nin A Thousand Plateaus'da (1980), is borrowed and queer is reconceptualized as an assemblative being which resists gender-oriented views. Following this, an antithesis is posed towards the views that ossify Soysal's and Rossi's texts around the notion of“womanhood”, which in turn embody the risk of being essentialist, and attention is driven on their writings' trans-national pattern and queer disposition. This argument is supported in the second and third chapters via a comparative analysis and a close reading of the two novels in question from the perspective of queer theory. The main argument of the study is that political and doingoriented dispositions of queerness, rather than sexual identity-oriented ones, also underlined by early queer theorist, were already existent in peripheral cultures and literatures, almost two decades before the theoretical articulation of queer theory in the West. This situation is tried to be proved with the close examination of stylistic, fictional and ideological elements of the novels in question.
