The concept of conflict, as we face with very often in our daily lives, comprises various phenomena and situations from wars to industrial competition. The term, conflict may also be generally used for the situations in which people dislike each other. The purpose of our study is to investigate the level and the sources of organizational conflict by conducting an emprical research at different brances of Atatürk University. Despite conflicts are seen in almost every field of life, there are very few scientific studies carried out in our country, in addition, these studies are mainly concentrated on the theoretical aspects of the conflict issue. For this reason, we not only studied the theoretical framework for conflict but also carried out an emprical study for it. The concept of conflict has been defined in different ways with different studies accomplished by various disciplines. These definitions, however, have a common point in respect to defining the concept as discordness, digagreement, dispute, contradiction, hostility or as a troublesome event. Our study has two sections. In the first section, we evaluate the conflict concept in general and investigate its relationship with similar concepts and finally review how the concept are considered in the theory of organization. Although there are miscellaneous sources for conflict at different levels and between different parties in any organization, it is important to recognize them for finding possible solutions. The various conflict sources are also studied in the first section. We can classify the conflicts in organizations in different ways. These classification is also shown in our study and the organizational implication of conflict is studied. Because it is not possible to avoid from conflicts, the duty of modern managers should be to manage them and to find solutions. There are different approaches in managing the conflicts. These approaches are studied at the end of the first section. The second section includes an emprical study carried out Atatürk University, Erzurum. This emprical study aims at investigating the level and sources of conflict and the methods for resolving them. For this purpose we conducted a series of statistical analysis to see if there are statistically significant differences between faculty and administrative staff at the university.
