Özet
Beklenmedik, ani ve karşı konulmaz bir olay olan travmaya ilk tepki, şok ve korkudur. Travmatik olaylar, öngörülemeyen doğaları ve karşı konulamaz güçleri ile kişiyi çaresiz ve güçsüz hissettirir. Travmanın kişisel pisikoloji üzerindeki etkisi mağdurda, anlam verme ve kontrol hissinin kaybıyla ortaya çıkar. Travmanın neden olduğu pisikolojik yaraların onarılabilmesi için, kişinin bir tür iyileşme sürecinden geçmesi gerekir; travma hatırlanmalı, anlamlandırılmalı, özümsenmeli, ve bir tür duygusal boşalım sağlanmalıdır. Tüm bu süreç, kişinin benlik ve bütünlük hissinin geri kazanımına ve oluşmuş olabilecek hasarların onarımına yardımcı olur.Yukarıda verilen ve bireysel düzeyde psikolojik travmayı genel hatları ile açıklayan bu hususların tümü bir topluluğada uygulanabilir. Bu bağlamda, 11 Eylül olayları Amerikan ulusunun tarihindeki en travmatik deneyimlerden biri olmuş ve Amerikan kimliğini derinden etkilemiştir. Toplum düzeyinde kolektif bir travmanın hatırlanma, anlamlandırma ve özümsenme sürecinde, çeşitli sosyal ve politik kurumlar ile kültürel araçlar harekete geçer. Bu çerçevede, kültürel bir araç olarak sinema, bir travmanın nasıl ele alınacağını ve hatırlanacağını şekillendirmede çok önemli bir rol oynar. Filmler, görsel anlatımlarıyla toplumun kimliğini şekillendirebilir ve onarıcı bir etki sağlama gücüne sahiptirler.Bundan hareketle, The Guys (2002) ve World Trade Center (2006), 11 Eylül travmasını beyazperdeye taşıyan, Amerikalılar tarafından yazılmış ve yönetilmiş olan ilk iki sinema filmidir. Bu tez çalışması, 11 Eylül travmasını aktarırken; kahramanlık, metanet ve birlik gibi temaları vurgulayan sözkonusu iki filmin Amerikan kimliğini nasıl onarmak ve yeniden yapılandırmak adına tasarlanmış olduklarını ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.

A traumatic event is one that is unexpected, sudden, and overwhelming; the immediate response to a traumatic event is shock and fear. Due to its unexpected nature and its overwhelming force, a traumatic event causes a person to feel helpless and powerless. The impact of trauma on the individual psyche results in the victim?s loss of sense of control and meaning. For recovery to take place, the individual must go through some form of healing process. The trauma must be remembered, integrated into the individual?s meaning scheme and some form of emotional release must be achieved. These processes help the individual repair and reconstruct any damage that might have been done to the individual?s sense of self and integrity.All of the above, which outline psychological trauma on an individual level, can be applied to a collectivity. Within this framework, the events of 9/11 constitute one of the most traumatic experiences in the American nation?s history. 9/11 as a collective trauma, has had a profound impact on America?s sense of self. As with individual traumas, collective traumas also need to be remembered and assimilated into the collective psyche. For such a process to take place on a collective level, several political and social institutions and cultural devices are activated. Cinema as a cultural medium, then, becomes a very important device in shaping how a trauma is to be interpreted and remembered. Consequently, films can have the power to reshape collective identity and uplift a society through their visual narratives.Within this context, The Guys (2002) and World Trade Center (2006) were the first two cinema films written and directed by Americans to deal with the trauma of 9/11 on the silver screen. Through an examination of what these films represent and how they choose to represent them, this study aims to show that these two films are designed to repair and reconstruct the American collective identity and heal the American national psyche through stories of empowerment which focus on heroism, endurance and unity.
