ABSTRACT This is a preliminary study carried out for the purpose of contributing to the teaching of translation in ELT Departments of Universities in Turkey by discussing the fundamental problems of the students in translation classes in the ELT Department of Selçuk University. The introduction chapter is devoted to the problems observed in translation classes and the purpose of the study. The second chapter deals with the review of literature related to the subject matter. It gives information on the history of translation, tenets in translation and the place of translation in teaching languages within the pre-linguistic period. Possible definitions of translation and equivalence problem in translation are also discussed in this chapter. The third chapter commences with the role of translation in language teaching and learning within the modern period. Consecutively, the place of translation in major language teaching approaches and methods is explained in detail. This chapter also emphasizes the importance of translation at the university level and displays the weaknesses of a traditional translation class. The fourth chapter is devoted to the study of the fundamental problems of students in translation classes. The erroneous or deficient translations which are handed in exam documents to teachers in the ELT Department of Faculty of Education, Selçuk University are examined. Additionally, the predicted problems of students are included. The fifth chapter concludes the study with related final remarks and suggestions for the translation teachers. This thesis aims to fill up the lackingpoints in teaching translation to university students by bringing a different point of view. The study has two appendices. Appendix A contains some sample translation activities for translation classes. Appendix B includes the answer key for the sample translation activities.
