ABSTRACT This study is not a guiding study of teaching literature in a step by step approach. An English teacher who wants to have a look at this study will not be able to find an implimentation. However, he will certainly be able to find clues and teaching points to be the basis of implimentation. The first chapter presents a background to the study and clarifies the aims of the study. The second chapter presents some basic concepts and definition of language and linguistics» The third chapter identifies some basic competences on which the further activities should be founded. Then, some literary definitions are given in order to clarify the teaching points of literature. The difference and functions of teaching literature lie in the discrimination of the literary concepts in the forth and further chapters. To make use of literature, mainly for linguistic competence stylistic is inevitable, because stylistics is the linguistic approach to literature. To implement teaching of poetry in a stylistic way, what style is and what levels it has are given in the later chapter. Next chapter presents how to teach poetry as subject in a stylistic way with the emphasis on STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING by Robert Lee Frost. The implementation of THE ROAD NOT TAKEN, by Robert Frost, presents teaching poetry as discipline. In the last chapter a brief summary of the study is given. iii
