ABSTRACT In writing this thesis we have one major objective in mind; How could literature be of use in EFL classes? Therefore we have chosen to begin by raising some key issues with which both teachers and students are confronted. Chapter one presents the major linguistic concepts employed in defining what language is. We prefer it to be in chronological order so that we can trace the development in language studies. Chapter two theoratically discusses what literature is, how it distinguishes from non-literary work by giving examples mainly from Chapman, Scholes, and Widdowson. We try to find out the areas where they agree and where they disagree with other critics. Chapter three focuses itself on the characteristics of the materials to be taught and exemplifies the traditional criteria. iiiChapter four illustrates how we can practice the techniques in the interpretation and evaluation of a narrative work of art in the class. The benefits from a stylistic analysis of literature are clarified and finally suggestions are made for studying a novel, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Chapter five summarizes the basic assumptions about the nature of novel as a genre, as well as the constituents such as 'plot, characterization, irony1, etc. The diffe rences between short story, romance, and philosophical tale and similarities are emphasized. Chapter six discusses how we can teach Slaughter house-Five in the light of the critical concepts exem plified in chapter five. iv
