Özet
ÖZET John Gower Confessio Amantis adlı şiirinde aşk temasını başlıca dört çeşit edebi akımı eserinde kullanarak işler. Bunlar rüya şiir geleneği, hikaye içinde hikaye geleneği, günah çıkarma geleneği ve saray usulü aşk geleneğidir. Şair eserde saray usulü aşk ve bir toplumda insanların birbirlerine karşı duydukları sevgi olmak üzere başlıca iki çeşit aşk üzerinde durur. Gower, bütün eser boyunca, saray usulü aşk geleneğinin kurallarını kendine özgü bir şekilde işler. Bu geleneğin ideallerini Hıristiyan bir yaklaşım içinde, 7 Ölümcül Günaha bağlantılı olarak inceler ve kendi saray usulü aşk kavramını ortaya koyar. Şair bu sistemin Hıristiyan dininin kurallarına uygun olan ideallerini kabul eder. Bir aşık iyi bir karaktere sahip olmalı; sevdiğine karşı mütevazi, dürüst, sadık, iffetli, cömert ve kibar olmalıdır. Şair diğer taraftan bu dinin kurallarına ters düşen diğer bütün idealleri şiddetle reddeder. Aşıkların aşırı heyecanlı olmalarına, aşk uğruna uzak diyarlarda Müslümanlara karşı savaşmalarına ve kıskançlık fikrine karşı çıkar. Gower herşeyden önemlisi bu sistemde evlilik kurumunun kötülenmesine ve zinanın savunulmasına karşı çıkar ve bütün eser boyunca evliliği insan ırkının devamını sağlayan faydalı bir kurum olarak yüceltir. Gower için bedensel aşk şerefli, saf ve iffetli bir aşk olan evlilikteki aşktır.Şiirde işlenen bir diğer aşk türü de bir toplumda insanların birbirlerine karşı duydukları sevgidir. Zamanın birtakım politik, sosyal, ekonomik ve dini olaylarından rahatsız olan şair ülkede bölünme ve karışıklığın olduğuna inanmış ve bunun sebebini de insanlar arasında sevginin bulunmayışına bağlamıştır. Sevgi insanları birbirine bağlar ve ülkede barış ve birliği sağlar. Gower, bütün şiir boyunca, içinde dini grupların ve avukatların da bulunduğu İngiliz toplumunun değişik kesimlerini yanlış davranışlarından dolayı eleştirir ve bunların davranışlarını düzeltmelerini ister. Yine bütün eser boyunca ve özellikle VII. Bölümde, dolaylı olarak kral II. Richard' a nasıl bir ideal kral olunacağı hakkında öğüt verir. Şair eserin sonunda Tanrı 'ya insanlar arasında sevginin var olması için dua eder. Gower ideal bir kral tarafından yönetilen birbirine bağlı bir İngiliz toplumu oluşturmak istemektedir.

İT ABSTRACT John Gower in his poem Confessio Amantis deals with the theme of love by making use of mainly four kinds of literary traditions of the time : the dream-poetry, the framed-tales, the penitential tradition and courtly-love. He presents mainly two kinds of love in the poem which are courtly- love and love as a principle of social harmony. Gower, throughout his work, deals with the ideals of the courtly-love tradition with a Christian point of view, in relation to the Seven Deadly Sins and presents his own concept of courtly-love. He accepts the ideals of this system that are in accord with the teachings of Christianity. He agrees that a courtly lover must have a good character. He must be humble, true, loyal, chaste, generous, and courteous towards his lady. The poet, on the other hand, strictly rejects the ideals of this system that are against the precepts of this faith. He opposes the over-excited state of lovers and the ideas of fighting for the sake of love in strange lands against the heathens and jealousy. Gower, above all, rejects the cynical attitude towards marriage and the idealization of adultery in this system. The poet, throughout the entire poem, praises marriage as a utilitarian institution that ensures the continuity of the human1 race.Sensual love for Gower is the honourable, pure and virtuous love which is married love. The second kind of love treated in the poem is love as a principle of social harmony- The poet, dissatisfied with certain political, social, economic, and religious events of the time, believes that there is division and chaos in the land due to lack of charitable love among people. He knows that love is essential for any society. It binds people together and leads to peace and unity in the land. Throughout the poem, he criticizes different parts of English society such as the clergy and the lawyers, for indulging in vices and wants them to amend themselves. They should love each other and work for the common profit of the community. The poet also throughout the entire work, especially in Book VII, gives indirect advice to king Richard II about how to become an ideal king. He ends his poem with a prayer to God to send charitable love among people. Gower wants to form a unified nation governed by an ideal king.
