SUMMARY CHARACTERIZATION OF AHMET MÎDHAT IN STORY TELLING This work consists of Ahmet Midhat's short and long stories. Twenty six stories in Letaif-i Rivayet have been searched in the first section. In the second section. Kıssa dan Hisse and Durub-x Emsal-i £smaniyye which took part in Hikemiyyatmin Ahkamını Tasvir,, have been examined. This work mentioned above begins with an introduction in which the basic concepts related to Ahmet Midhat's bio graphy, personality, mentality of art, thoughts and way of telling stories, are introduced. Place, time and characters have been analized firstly in long stories and secondly in short ones. Large places, nature, cities, towns and villages have been listed in the stories. On the other hand; houses, mansions, palaces, rooms, cafds, hotels, flats, schools, mosques, churches, ship, boats, phaetons, trains and dormitories have been given as the examples of narrow places. The large place of some stories is generally Ottoman Empire's georgaphy but specif icly Istanbul,. Another part of the stories' large place is Europe and especially Paris. Time is used in three ways in the stories: The time before the writer lives, the time inwhich the writer lives and the imaginative times. He usually uses time in the chronological order but also he sometimes returns to past. Most of the characters have been chosen among the Turks. There are also some minorities in the cast of the characters. The majority of the foreigners consists of French people. English, Arabian and Acem people take part, too. Most of the important people are male. However, there are also some important women.-461- People are categorized according to their jobs. Places are pointed out according to the establishment of the event. As the centre, the first helper and figurants. People are searched in two ways about behavior; straight and round. The writer's success in using the place, establishing a relation-ship between time and people and drawing characters has been evaluated. In the third setion, Ahmet Midhat's narration technique in the stories has been examined. In the introduction part of the stories, giving information, describing people and introducing the events have been emphasized. His tendency of mystories and intriguer elements have been determined. It has been seen that the writer very often gave a break and informed the reader. At the end he punished the criminals and told the main idea. In the fourth section, the writer's way of using our classical story tradition has been investigated. It has been explained that he got help the Meddah tradition in“Dolaptan Temaşa”, fairy tales in“Nasip”, anecdotes in“Hırs”, fables in“Kıssadan Hisse”and proverbs in“Durub-i Emsal-i Osman- niyye Hikemiyatmin Ahkamını Tasvir”. In the fifth section,“family, woman and love”consepts have been pointed out. In the conclusion and total evaluation part, stabilizations were summarized and the results were totally expressed.
