Even though the amount of research that has been done on the progress of women in the business world is plenty and increasing in the Western countries. There is not enough data and research conducted on women managers in Turkey. Questions like how do Turkish women progress? ~n what level do they enter the business world and how does this affect \ their climb up the corporate ladder? Are they paid equally with men in all types and sizes of organizations? Are they really given all the opportunities that men are offered or do they have to struggle for the same rights? This study is an attempt at answering some of these questions, through focusing on the organizational patterns of one U. S. company based in Turkey which operates in the computer and telecommunications industry. Variables such as age, tenure, education, hierarchical level, organizational departments, progress opportunities along with salary earned are scrutinized mainly focusing on the differences based on gender. The results of statistical analyses show that even though there are more women employees in the organization studied, the managerial levels are occupied by men. Women on the average are younger, have a lower level of education, and are clustered in the lower ranges and staff departments which are not very powerful in the decision process of the company. Men on the contrary are clustered in the line departments which have direct contact with the customer in this company whose mission includes customer satisfaction. Significant differences were found between male and female employees on the above mentioned criteria. Hierarchical regression analyses were run to see the effect of gender on progress and salary. The analysis results confirmed that the type of department (staff/line) has a large influence on the salary level. Since most women in the company are placed in the staff departments, then there is indirect discrimination against women in terms of salary. Progress was explained in a large extent by tenure, education and age. Tenure was significant in this model. Results of this study may be useful to see the reasons why even though women are numerous in the business world, we do not see many of them in upper level management.
