The importance of foreign trade has been growing for most countries recently. Foreign trade is particularly important for developing countries as trade can be an engine of growth. Main subject of this study is to examine the effect of foreign trade on growth in Turkey during the period between 1998Q1 and 2013Q4. In recent years it has been an important issue to analyse whether exports and imports affect growth or growth affects foreign in economic literature. Therefore, this study aims at examining the direction of the relation between foreign trade and growth. The value of exports and imports are determined as independent variables and GDP is considered as the dependent variable in this study. Firstly, unit roots tests have been applied in order to examine causality between the trade and growth series we examine. Secondly, Augmented Dickey Fuller unit root test has been used to determine stationary degrees of the series. It is observed that the first differences of the series are stationary, therefore Granger causality test is applied for this series. In sum, our results indicate that there is a uni-directional causality running from exports to GDP. We also find that there is a bi-directional Granger causality between imports and GDP.
