SUMMARY In this thesis named as“The Role of Television in Urbanization”the people who live in slums, urbanization and television are take into consideration. This work is composed of two parts. In the first section theoretical subjects like the fenemenon and process of urbanization, the fenemenon of slum and mass communication are dealth with. In the second section, the findings of an investigation made in a slum area of Ankara are analysed. The aim and extent of the work is to analyse the role of TV in the process of urbanization. At the same time we aim to show the role of TV on the people of slum areas in their participation with in the socio-cultural context. The thoretical knowledge in the first section is taken as the basis of the evaluation of embprical findings. In the second section, we try to evaluate the emprical findings of the research. The tool of research is applied in the Çankaya province.“Karapınar Mahallesi”represents a good example of slum area. The knowledge which is produced from an anket given to 210 adults is evaluated with respect to age, sex, the level of education, the lengths of staying the city and attitcetes againts watching television. 137
