122 ABSTRACT Pecularities observed in Written expressions of primary school children in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The aim of this research is to put porth the pecularities observed in the written expressions of the primary school children of the TRNC, ant to account for these pecularities in the sphere of phonetics and spelling, language usage (morphology and word order) as well as vocabulary, and to show if such pecularities, point to differences according to settlements i.e townships and villages. In the reseacrh the cluster sampling method has been applied. The samplings of the reseacrh consist of 1 82 Vtn from pupils from 1 1 primary schools located in townships, and 59 Vtn from pupils from 3 villages. In the research the pupils selected as subjects were made to fill in a the questionnaire, and were asked to write a composition. In the light of information obtamed from the questionnaire sheets; the compositions of the pupils whose parents of themselves were of foreign subjects (foreigners) or pupils who lived out side the area where their schools were situated on those who have already done so were excluded from the research. In the research, compositions of 112 primary school pupils in the fifth from 91 of whom were from township and 21 from villages were subjected to evaluation. In the statistical treatment percentages and frequencies were applied. According to the result obtained from the data it has been observed that the primary school children write as they speak, and that they transfer the regional pecularities into their written expressions. The pecularities studied according to the state of settlements revealed rather than different pecularities between the two groups with regard to phonetics and spelling proportional differences. As to differences regarding language usage and vocabulary, there are both proportional and different pecularities between the two groups mentioned above. Ankara, 1994
