Özet
Antik dönemin en önemli yerleşim yerlerinden birisi olan Nikomedia (İzmit) ve çevresinin arkeolojik potansiyelini ortaya çıkarmak amaçlı, Kocaeli ve çevresinde gerçekleştirilen yüzey araştırmalarının 2005-2012 yılları (2009 hariç) çalışmaları sırasında ele geçen Roma Dönemi'ne ait pişirme kapları bu tez çalışmasının konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Kocaeli'nin Gebze, Dilovası, İzmit, Kartepe ve Gölcük ilçelerinde tespit edilen, Erken Roma Dönemi'nden Bizans Dönemi'ne kadar geniş bir tarih aralığında kullanılan bu pişirme kapları zengin form çeşitliliğine sahiptirler.Bu çalışmada değerlendirdiğimiz kaplar, tencereler, güveç, tava ve pişirme kaplarıyla ilgili diğer seramikler (kapaklar) olarak sınıflandırılmışlar ve alt gruplara ayrılarak incelenmişlerdir. Sonuçlar, üretim yerleri belirlenen kaplara göre yerel ve ithal ve ithal taklidi mallar olarak ana başlıklar altında toplanmıştır. Değerlendirmeye alınan pişirme kapları, ağız ve gövde formlarına göre gruplara ayrılmışlardır. Buna göre, yerel üretim tencereler 21 form grubuna, güveçler 6 form grubuna, tavalar 4 form grubuna, kapaklar ise 6 form grubuna ayrılarak incelenmişlerdir. Ege üretimi olduğu belirlenen tencereler 3 form grubuna ayrılarak değerlendirilmiş olup güveçlerde ise tek form çeşitlemesi olduğu görülmüştür. Suriye kökenli gevrek mal (brittle ware) grubuna ait tencereleri 4 form grubuna ayrılarak incelenmiştir. Form grupları, daha önce değerlendirilmiş ve yayınlanmış pişirme kapları formları ile karşılaştırılmış, hamur ve astar özellikleri göz önünde bulundurularak ağız ve gövde formu benzerliklerine göre tarihlendirme önerileri sunulmuştur.Pişirme kaplarının değerlendirildiği bu çalışma, konu ve çalışılan malzeme itibariyle Bithynia Bölgesi hakkında yapılan ilk çalışmadır. Bu çalışma ile bir Hellenistik ve Roma Başkenti olan Nikomedia ve çevresinde tespit edilen pişirme kapları değerlendirilerek, kentin ve bölgenin sosyal yaşantısına ve antik ticaretteki yerine ışık tutulmaya çalışılmıştır.

The subject of this thesis is the Roman cooking wares that came to light during surveys in Kocaeli and its environs between 2005 and 2012 with the exception of 2009, surveys intended to bring to the fore the archaeological potential of Nicomedia (Ancient Izmit) and its environs, one of the most important settlements in antiquity. These wares were found in the towns of Gebze, Dilovası, İzmit, Kartepe and Gölcük, all of which are located in today's region of Kocaeli. They derive from a broad period, stretching from the Early Roman Period to the Byzantine Period, and display significant variation in terms of form. For the purposes of this study, the cooking wares and other ceramics (lids) in question were sorted into the categories of cooking pottery, casseroles and frying pans and evaluated accordingly. The aim of the study was to develop a catalogue of the assembled pottery cooking wares, to establish production locations for them, and in so doing to distinguish between local and imported wares. The pottery wares included in this study were divided into subgroups according to their rim and body profiles. Through this method, a distinction was made between 21 different form-groups of local cooking pots, 6 form-groups of local casseroles, 4 form-groups of local frying pans and 6 categories of lids. It proved possible to divide the cooking pots of Aegean provenance into 3 form-groups, but only one type of casserole could be identified. Syrian cooking pots of 'Brittle Ware' were sub-divided into 4 form-groups. The form-groups were compared with other categories of cooking wares that have been studied and published to date, with special attention being paid to the characteristics of the clay and slip used. Datings for the items were also proposed, based on similarities between them and existing wares in terms of rim and body form. This is the first study to deal with the cooking wares of the Bithynia Region, both as a subject and as a collection of materials. It is hoped that the analysis of the cooking wares of Nicomedia, a Hellenistic and Roman capital, and its environs, will shed light on the lifestyle of this city and the surrounding region as well as providing an insight into the place of Nicomedia within ancient trade networks.
