Özet
Nikomedia, günümüz İzmit'i, ilk olarak Hellenistik Dönem'de I. Nikomedes tarafından kurulmuştur. Avrupa ve Asya kıtaları arasındaki coğrafyaya hakim konumu ve güvenli limanı sayesinde Nikomedia, her zaman için stratejik önemini korumuştur. Özellikle Roma ve onu takip eden Bizans Dönemi içerisinde güçlü bir merkez olarak karşımıza çıkan Nikomedia'da, bu dönemler içerisinde, sivil yapıların dışında başta dini yapılar olmak üzere çok sayıda kamusal yapı inşa edilmiştir. Nikomedia ve çevresinde şimdiye kadar gerçekleştirilen tek bilimsel çalışma olarak, 2005-2014 yıllarında 2009 yılı hariç 9 yıldır devam eden ve 2015 yılı itibari ile de devam ettirilmesi planlanan, merkezi daha önceki Nikomedia ve teritoryumu olan, Kocaeli İli ve İlçelerinde gerçekleştirilen arkeolojik yüzey araştırmalarında belgelenen kırk üç adet sütun başlığı bu tez çalışmasının konusunu oluşturmuştur. Hem Nikomedia merkezinden hem de teritoryumundan tespit edilen Roma ve Bizans dönemlerine ait sütun başlıkları tespit edildikleri bölgeler dikkate alınarak incelenmiş, sınıflandırılmış ve tarihlendirilmeleri yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmayla, yakın çevresini kültür etkisi altında bırakan Nikomedia Antik Kenti'nin ve sınırları içinde bulunduğu antik Bithynia Bölgesi'nin Roma ve Bizans dönemi tarihini aydınlatmak ve söz konusu dönemin mimari plastik konusu ele alınarak mimarlık yapılarının bilinmeyen yönlerinin açığa çıkarılması amaç edinilmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra, bu başlıkların Kocaeli'nde sürdürülen arkeolojik yüzey araştırmalarında tespit edilen diğer mimari malzemelerle birlikte toplu olarak değerlendirmesinin ilk adımı atılmış olmaktadır.

Nicomedia, modern İzmit, was founded as a settlement in the Hellenistic period by Nicomedes I. Because of its safe harbour and its commanding position at that point where the Europe and Asia converge, the city has always been strategically important. Nicomedia's heyday as a center of power was during the Roman and Byzantine periods, which saw numerous public construction projects, including the building of both civic and religious structures. Throughout the years between 2005 and 2014, with the exception of 2009, surveys were conducted of Kocaeli district, centering on the former territory of Nicomedia and its environs, the first ever scientific study of this area and this work is planned to continue in 2015 and subsequent years. This thesis, the first of its kind, focuses on the forty-three column capitals that were documented in the course of these surveys. As well as drawing attention to, and discussing, the find-spots of the column capitals from the Roman and Byzantine era that have emerged in Nicomedia and the surrounding territory, it scrutinises these capitals and proposes a typology and dating of them. Through its focus on architectural sculpture of the Roman and Byzantine periods in the ancient territory of Bithynia, this study aims to uncover little-known aspects of the architecture of these eras in Bithynia, a province that had a considerable cultural impact on the wider region. The thesis also contributes to our general knowledge of this particular period in Bithynian history. In addition, it is hoped that the examination of these capitals will be the first step towards a comparison and evaluation of all the architectural materials that have been recorded during the ongoing surveys of the Kocaeli region.
