This dissertation is a study of changing conceptions of personhood in Turkey. It focuses on aprivate primary school, which encourages values of individualism, entrepreneurialism andcreativity, and stands in contrast to the state system promoting conformity and equality. Basedon one and a half years of participant observation at Bakış School, an upper middle and rulingclass primary school in Istanbul, the study investigates how teachers raised in a conformisteducational system develop a sense of `individualism?.The ethnographic evidence indicates that Bakış School reproduced as well as challenged thevalue systems underlying Turkish society. With its alternative educational model, Bakış calledinto question the nation-state?s attempts to promote a concept of personhood revolving aroundconformism, obedience and citizenship, and promoted the idea of a person being anindependent individual endowed with `rights?. The extent to which teachers and parentscomprehended these ideals forms a key part of the analysis and I also discuss how even theschool administration vacillated between opposing conceptions of personhood. Theethnographic data overwhelmingly indicate that in the process of creating an alternativeeducational system from scratch and trying to meet high expectations coming from the schoolauthority, teachers? roles and obligations, became so dominant as to downplay and pressurisetheir `selves?. Interestingly, in order to be able to raise children as independent individuals, theteachers needed to be interdependent people obedient to authority and this resulted in acomplex and often conflicting interplay between their ideals and their day-to-day experiences.The intention behind the present thesis is to provide a detailed ethnographic account of aschool promoting alternative education. It will contribute to contemporary debates oneducation reform in Turkey and enable policymakers to appreciate some of the conflicts andtensions likely to arise. This dissertation is one of the few works, if not the only one, that isbased on real life experiences and practices on the ground and could be regarded as a blueprintof the complicated dynamics inherent to the challenging process of putting educational reforminto practice.
