Özet (Çeviri)

This study has examined the fathers? and mothers? involvement with theirmentally delayed and normal children. The study also focuses on social support andparental stress experienced by parents. Human ecological theory and family systemstheory have been used as the conceptual frameworks to identify the predictor andmediating variables related to parent involvement, stress, and social support. The presentstudy included married mothers and fathers of young children with mental retardation andmothers and fathers of approximate age-matched typically developing children. I targeted4 to 7-year- old children with mental retardation rather than a broader range of childrenwith various disabilities. I hypothesized that after matching the groups on children?schronological age (CA) and gender I would find that couples with developmentallyatypical children might perceive more caregiving difficulties and stress than did parentsof typically developing children. Far more importantly, mothers? and fathers? experiencesof parental stress and social support have been different. Both mothers of developmentally atypical children and mothers ofdevelopmentally typical children have significantly more participated in every domain ofchildcare than did fathers. It seems that mothers still assume primary responsibility forchildcare activities. In addition to that, child atypicality but not gender has an importantimpact on parental involvement. Parents of developmentally atypical children were morelikely to be involved in childcare activities than parents of developmentally typicalchildren were. Parents of developmentally atypical and typical children were slightlydissatisfied with their own level of participation in childcare. In terms of satisfaction withpartner?s level of satisfaction, both mothers of developmentally atypical children andtypical children found to be dissatisfied with their partner?s level of participation inchildcare activities. This study revealed that, parents of developmentally atypical children were morelikely to perceive parent and family problems within household, more likely to bepessimistic, more likely to attribute negative characteristics to their child, and more likelyto perceive their child as physically incompetent than were parents of developmentallytypical children. Child typicality, but not gender, was a significant contributor in thestress level experienced by parents. In terms of social support, both mothers of developmentally atypical and typicalchildren felt that they receive significantly more support in every domain of socialsupport than did all fathers. This study also showed that supports are crucial for positivefamily functioning and emotional well being of parents with developmentally atypicalchildren as well as parents of developmentally typical children. Parents of youngchildren, especially parents with developmentally atypical children, expressed a needtoward ongoing social support.
