This dissertation investigated whether and how progress in Turkey*s European Union (EU) membership project, particularly the acceptance of the Turkey's candidacy for the EU membership in 1999 and the decree of the National Program in 2001, influenced the Turkish radical nationalist MHP and Islamist FP's views on the likely effects of the membership on the official state system and national identity and thus whether or not they supported the membership between January 1,1999-June 22,2001. The possible changes in the content and occurrences of these parties' framings and framing strategies on the given issues were analyzed over time. Selecting the decrees of the candidacy of Turkey for EU membership by the EU in 1999 and the first National Program by Turkey in 2001 as two critical discourse moments permits an analysis of possible changes over time particularly in reference to before, during and after these two events. A social constructivist's multi-paradigm approach including the theories of contemporary political sociology, social movement and frame analytic approach was employed. By employing a frame analytic approach, and latent and manifest content analysis, I systematically examined the operation of the official discursive mechanisms of these two parties. The data were mainly collected from official party sources (official programs, leader speeches, press briefings, official WebPages, newsletters, journals), and,as supplementary data, primarily fiom newspaper accounts (main-stream Hurriyet Sabah and Milliyet: Islamist Milli Gazete and Zaman: Turkish nationalist Ortadogu and Aksam). The FP and MHP's framing contests, in which the frames and counter-frames presented or re-presented, embraced or rejected, and modified or refrained in the course of various interactions with other socio-political actors (antagonists, protagonists and audience) were analyzed. This study will shed light on how an anticipated membership of a nation state in a supra-national organization influenced political actors' views on the transition of the official state system and national identity, and their support for or opposition to the membership.
