The objective of this study is to examine the impact of concentrated ownership on firm performance of Turkish firms during the financial crisis. My first hypothesis predicts the non-monotonicity of this relationship derived from alignment-of-interest and tunneling and expropriation hypotheses. My second hypothesis investigates the re versed-causality of the ownership and firm performance. Empirical findings suggest the non-monotonicity of ownership and financial performance during the crisis. Similarly, more concentrated ownership leads to better accounting performance. I also find that less diffused ownership is associated with higher firm performance. I conclude that effect or impact of ownership heavily depends on the variables chosen and employed in the regression analysis as well as the time period of the study.
