This study aims to compare the complaint strategies utilized in English and Turkish in the responses given to a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) presenting two hypothetical situations; a complaint made to a professor (Situation 1), and a complaint made to a roommate (Situation 2). The participants were native speakers of English (the ENSs, n=70), native speakers of Turkish (the TNSs, n =70), and Turkish non-native speakers of English (the TNNSs, n=70). The data was analyzed qualitatively to compare the three and observe pragmatic transfers committed by the Turkish learners when complaining in English. The qualitative analysis revealed that complaint strategies vary more as the gap between the speaker and the hearer in social status becomes smaller. Moreover, in Sit. 1 more requests were observed in similar amounts in all groups, indicating more polite language use. However, the Turkish participants diverged from their ENS counterparts in Sit. 2, resorting to the use of more direct language compared to the ENS. The findings indicate that the Turkish learners of English have a sense of politeness, but unlike the ENS, they tend to ignore politeness strategies more when talking to a social equal. The current study also suggests that although this need not be an indication of pragmatic failure, the foreign language instructors should help students gain pragmatic awareness through the study of pragmatic differences across cultures.
