This dissertation aims to make a study of Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway in terms of character analysis; to demonstrate how human functioning is based upon the interactions of the different layers of the personality, by employing Carl Jung's theory of the Collective Unconscious and Archetypes. In particular, the Shadow archetype and its relation to the concept of Persona and their significance during the Individuation process which is a journey towards the self This character analysis aims to make an interpretation of Mrs Dalloway from the perspective of Jungian Analytical Psychology; to demonstrate the hidden connection between Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Smith and the message of the novel according to this coimection. So far, most critics have pointed out the obvious similarities and differences between the two characters such as their emotional intensity, their attitudes towards marriage, their isolation, their depression and feeling alone and so on. I will also touch upon the death instinct and its connection to the collective unconscious and the functioning of time through Mrs. Dalloway.
