In this currcnt longitudinal study matcrnal scaffolding was examined during mothcr-child interactions during a bead-stringing task. Scaffolding rcfcrs to tlıe supportive assistancc given by a morc knovvicdgeablc pcrson to a novicc partner during onc-on-onc interactions. Previous research on scaffolding has focused primarily on scaffolding in educational settings. The present study, hovvever, focused on maternal scaffolding in mother-child interaction settings as a funetion of age, gender, and ethnicity of children. İn particular, little is knovvıı about scaffolding behaviors of mothers from diverse ethnic and low-income groups. Thercfore. this study explored mother-child interaction in a non-clinical sample of Dominican. African American, and Mexican mothers living in New York City. The interaction of 92 mother-child dyads was observed during a Beading Task, in which young children typically require guidance from their mothers in order to successfully string the beads. The Beading Task was assessed when children wcre 14, 24. and 36 months of age. Rcsults indicated tlıat mothers' scaffolding behaviors vary aeross children's development. Additionally, there wcre ethnic diffeı ences in the types of maternal scaffolding mothers displayed during the interaction. For instance, Mexican mothers gcstured signifıcantly more than African American mothers vvhen their children were 14 months of age.
