The decentralized federal state model composed of regions based on ethnic and cultural identity may not be the best model for the new Iraq based on a reading of recent events in the region. Although the Iraqi National Assembly and Iraqi citizens have already approved a new Iraqi Constitution with a decentralized federal state model, possible consequences of such a choice should be examined for further policy implications. In fact, the current study argues that the decentralized federal state model might further complicate the issues, and threaten the security/stability at both the local and regional levels in Iraq. Accordingly, the decentralized federal state model should be reevaluated before it causes more complications in the region.
