Recently,“smart”title has been started to use for many products and applications. These new products and applications offer multifunctional properties that other conventional cannot provide. Smart Phones, Smart Buildings, Smart Warfare Equipments, Smart Home Appliances attract their targeted audience through their additional numerous specialities that enhance convenience and productivity. While doing so, it would be unrealistic to expect these additional facilities could provide service via traditional materials and production techniques. In parallel with rapid development in nanotechnology, material science enabled modification of materials at the nanoscale in order to satisfy complex product requirements. Therefore, a new material class that is called“smart materials”has been originated apart from our everyday traditional materials such as metal, ceramic or polymer. Smart materials have ability to respond changing external stimuli such as pH, temperature, humidity change etc. Smart polymer materials play crucial role in global materials industry with $22 billion market value which is projected to exceed $40 billion by 2016. These special materials are becoming more popular with their numerous applications in various industries. It is aimed to assess current applications of smart polymer applications in market and evaluate global market sectors and consumption rates for defining global emerging markets and promising potential applications of smart polymers. On the other hand, this project has been focused on the healthcare industry in order to identify potential benefits of smart polymer applications and barriers for implementing smart polymer applications into healthcare industry in an emerging economy. Finally, an implementation strategy is suggested to overcome identified implementation barriers.
