Özet (Çeviri)
In the process of Turkey's accession negotiations to join the European Union, various efforts to ascertain and compile data on the Turkish population have been required. Among these is an accurate depiction of its health and nutritional habits, a subject on which, to this date, there exists a lack of information. This paper seeks to address this paucity in two parts. In the first part, the characteristics of nutrition patterns in Turkey are explored. The question is asked whether people living in Turkey consume sufficient amounts of the four food groups (milk, meat, vegetable-fruit, and bread-cereals). Food consumption amounts per capita are revealed for specific food groups and compared with the recommended amounts given in the Dietary Guidelines for Turkey. In the second part, the effect of socio-economic factors (region, settlement type, education level of household heads, and household size and income) on consumption of milk and dairy products is examined using Multiple Regression Method. Drawing upon Household Budget Survey micro datasets from the Turkish Statistical Institute, findings indicate that although people maintain adequate dietary intake, the type and amount of food consumed is imbalanced. Specifically, consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and cereals appear to be significantly greater than recommended levels. Consumption of meat, egg, and legumes is found to be similar to recommended levels, though with some imbalances, and consumption of milk and dairy products appear to be significantly lower than recommended. Results show that dairy consumption increases from west to east across Turkey and from urban to rural locations. It is further positively associated with household size and negatively associated with the education level of household heads. Results were compared with other data sources and found to be consistent with the conditions of Turkey.
