At the present time, the transnational nature of terrorism is a serious threat to global peace and security. Terrorist groups have significant advantages over security forces since they can choose when and where to attack. Consequently, intelligence has gained more importance in dealing with the threat of terrorism. However, HUMINT has been underestimated in comparison to other methods of intelligence collection, especially TECHINT. Although TECHINT capabilities have improved due to technological developments, the importance of human intelligence cannot be ignored. In fact, HUMINT provides vital information and insight that other collection methods cannot. Therefore, this thesis aims to show the indispensable role of human intelligence in counteracting terrorism. The main focus of the thesis will be on four historical cases, which analyse both intelligence failures and successes in a comparative way, to gain a better understanding of the role of human intelligence. As a result of this analysis, either possession of good HUMINT or the absence of will clearly illustrate and justify the idea that human intelligence is of vital importance in the fight against terrorism.
