More than four years after the first street protests, the shock waves are still being felt across the Middle East. With raging conflict in Iraq and Syria and ongoing crisis in Yemen, it is no surprise that most analysts see sectarianism as the main source of conflicts and violence in the Middle East. Recognizing the importance of sectarian identity in the regional politics, this dissertation will examine the role of sectarian identity in interstate conflicts of the region. By concentrating on Syria and Iraq, the study will identify the dynamics behind the spread of conflicts in the region. It will conclude that sectarian identity is not the driver of interstate conflicts in the region. Geopolitical competition and decline in state power appear to be the most significant factors behind the increasing violence in the region.
