This study focuses on the impact that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has had on the Turkish economy. The study attempts to examine the effect that FDI has had on the Turkish economy focusing in particularly on the key sectors in Turkey, where FDI can be seen to have had a positive impact in recent years. The study has particularly concentrated on the Automotive Sector in Turkey, using a case study approach particularly looking at the motives of Mercedes-Benz Türk A.Ş., MAN Türkiye A.Ş., Delphi Diesel Systems and Yazaki when investing in Turkey. The main conclusion from this study show that the main motives of companies when investing in Turkey include the level and nature of local competition, access to cheap foreign capital, investing as part of a cost reduction strategy and taking advantage of local demand. The study showed to some extent that FDI had had a positive impact on the Turkish economy overall, and that to continue to attract FDI into Turkey the Government should continue to pursue liberal economic policies, to try to reduce the bureaucratic burden for investors and should also continue to develop and maintain an attractive legal framework for foreign investors as these were all factors that the case study companies highlighted as problems that they had to overcome when investing in Turkey.
