Various findings proposed that partner violence would either predict a decrease in maternal sensitivity (the spillover hypothesis) or an increase in maternal sensitivity (the compensatory hypothesis) (Erel & Burman, 1995). In the present study, we predicted a decrease in maternal sensitivity at 3.5 years childhood in the presence of recent (from 7 months to 3.5 years of childhood) and early (birth to 7 months postpartum) partner violence. Among 840 first time mothers, 271 participants were over selected for women who reported inter-partner psychological abuse at 20 weeks gestation for the Wirral Child Health & Development Study (WCHADS). To investigate the relationship between partner violence and maternal sensitivity parental reports, questionnaires and behavioral observations were used. We found that recent exposure to partner violence did not significantly predict a decrease in maternal sensitivity; however early exposure to violence did predict. After controlling for the confounders, the contribution of early partner violence became insignificant. The overall direction of the findings was in line with the spillover hypothesis.
