This is the comparative analysis of the late Ottoman and early Turkish Republican periods in terms of the 'nationalisation' and 'civilisation' projects of the respective elites of those eras in relation to the Circassian community within Turkey. Even though the North Caucasians gained some rights in the CUP period, they faced the excessive restriction policies of the Kemalist elites following the Çerkes Ethem and Anzavur incidents. Nevertheless, it is argued that there was a significant amount of continuity between the CUP and Kemalist elites in terms of domestic policies. The thesis also focuses on the period of the 'National Struggle' by considering the North Caucasians' response to the Porte and the resistance movement of Anatolia. This was a chaotic situation, which also led to further conflicts between nationalists, loyalists, Muslim and non-Muslim minorities in each part of Asia Minor, and deleteriously impacted upon the Circassians.
