We are living on the edge of an unknown and catastrophic future, as rising sea levels, average temperatures, and many other effects of climate change start to affect our daily lives. Most efforts to mitigate such change seem to come from the developed nations which are referred to in the Kyoto Agreement as 'Annex 1' countries. However, their effort alone is insufficient to tackle a problem that requires global co-operation, which, in turn, inevitably necessitates the inclusion of developing countries. One such nation is Indonesia, the fourth most highly populated country in the world with its thriving economy that is threatening the global climate balance. Forest fires and haze are a well-known and long-standing issue in Indonesia; but the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions aspect attracts less attention on the world stage compared to biodiversity loss, endangered local communities, loss of livelihoods, health issues, and economic loss. This dissertation explores the extent of Indonesia's own responsibility to mitigate its GHG emissions. Indeed, considering the danger of climate change and its relation to GHG emissions, the Indonesian case is well worth looking into.
