The peaceful demonstrations that began in Syria on March 15, 2011, along with the Bashar al-Assad regime's attacks on civilians, served to ignite the Syrian civil war. Since March 2011, the Syrian crisis has caused thousands of Syrians to lose their lives and millions more to seek refuge in other countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt. Among these countries, Turkey has served as host to the largest number of Syrian refugees and has shown the hospitality that many other developed countries could not show. In order to examine the Syrian refugees' living conditions and the problems they have experienced in Turkey, and to analyze the ways in which the refugees have affected Turkey and the local people, this study employed interviews, which were conducted with three different groups. First, 60 Syrian refugees, most of whom have settled in the border provinces of Hatay and Gaziantep, were interviewed. These interviews made it clear that many Syrian refugees have experienced problems in attempting to access the labor and housing markets as well as free healthcare and public education services. Second, 60 Turkish citizens living in Hatay and Gaziantep provinces were interviewed. These interviews highlighted the many problems (e.g., difficulties in finding work and rental housing, access to healthcare services, traffic problems, problems with regard to the usage of parks and gardens) that Turkish citizens began experiencing after the Syrian refugees began arriving to Turkey. It was determined that the arrival of the Syrian refugees caused some of Turkey's existing social problems, such as child labor, begging, and child brides, to worsen. Finally, interviews were conducted with public offices, NGOs, academicians, and politicians. These interviews served to further bring to light many of the problems that the refugees and Turkish citizens have encountered since the Syrians refugees made their way to Turkey. The findings associated with this study have enabled the researcher to propose solutions aimed at addressing the problems experienced by both the Syrian refugees and Turkish citizens; these recommendations were shared with both the pertinent public offices and the NGOs involved in addressing the refugee crisis.
