MT- SUMMARY ESEN, Muamma:, The Emergence of The Concept of Ahl al-Sunna and Differing Perceptions of Sunnism, Ph.D.tehesis supervised by Professor Dr.MSait Yazıcıoğlu, submitted to The Faculty of Divinity, The University of Ankara, 1995, pp.249~ The present work is comprised of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The introduction sehds light upon the inevitable relationship betweetn the socio political events in early Islam and the emergence of politico-religious trends of thought, it particularly emphasizes that teh socio-political circumstances are responsible for differing perceptions of Ahl al-Sunna. Chapter one concentrates upon two terms: Sunna and Bid'a for the term Ahl al- Sunna cannot be properly analysed without understanding what is Sunna and what is Bid'a as the opposite of Sunna. This chapter covers analysis sohwing how Sunna was perceived by the Ulama of Hadith, Fiqh, Usui al-Fiqh an Kalam. Chapter two surveys the historical development of the term Ahl al-Sunna. It traces some narrations claiming that the term Ahl al-Sunna was used by as an early authority as Ibn Sirin of the early second century, but this chapter sees that such claims of early usage of Ahl al-Sunna are not necessarily reliable and that such early use of the term Ahl al-Sunna did not necessarily mean the Ahl- Al Sunna that was widely used in the third century when it repressented a particular religious sect. This chapter also shows that the generations of Sahabe and Tabiin contributed to the later conception of Ahl al-Sunna in the sense that they proved religious practice and perceptions which would be taken as the source of Ahl al-Sunna by later Ulama. Finaly, it explains various perceptions of Ahl al-Sunna as percieved by different prominent leaders of Sunni schools of religious law and thought. Chapter three evalmates the famous Hadith of Iftiraq (the Hadith dealing with the division of the Muslim community into different religious sects).It papticularly covers the classification of the religious sects and the intersectarian relationships. This chapter also attermpts to establish a definition of Ahl al-Sunna Wshich developed into a religious sect following the evolution of Sunni kalam. The conlusion puts forward that fanaticism in defence of any particular perception of religious sects is not Islamic since it leads to divisions among the Muslim Community. It also argues that any particular Muslim sect does not mean Islam itself and that rigid sectarian divisions are not compatible with the essence of Islam.
