ABSTRACT THE RELIGIOUS UNDERSTANDING OF THE HEJAZIANS AT THE PRE-ISLAMIC PERIODS BY MEHMET ORTAKA Y A SUPERVISOR: Prof. Dr. SABRÎ HİZMETLİ The Arabs, at the pre-Islamic periods, had mixed the Abrahamian Religious remainders with various elements of paganism. By the time paganizm had been the main body of the Arabic religion of Ignorance. Paganism had enterde the Hejaz region before Amr b. Luhay. Legitimating paganism which had begun to penetrate all over the society, Amr made it the main religion of the society. This attempt was a succesful one, and it was so spreaded that there was almost to be find a pagan in each house. By the emergence of the Islamic religion the rise of the paganism had come to a turning point, or Islam emerged in a time when the paganism had turned to decline. The pagans were being insulted and they wer not being esteemed as usual. The only reason remained for People's worshipping to the pagans was to maintain the traditions. The elites of the socitey, however, were encouraging the worship to the pagans. As it is understood from the Qur'an, the Arabic poem of the Age of Ignorance and some historical qoutations, the Arabians were believing in Allah, the prophets and the Day of Resurraction. Kabe was the last and the most important remainder inhherited from the Religion of Abraham. All groups consisting the society were claiming that they wer the true representatives of the Abrahaian Religion. For the arabians the Abrahamian Religion was stü the undistorted religion. Especially Jewish and Christianity were the other religions surviving at the Arabic Penunsila. Those religions had no much impact on the Arabians. Even these religions, had caused the Arabs to turn to their own religions and to clutch it hardly. 139
