Özet

Bu tezde, Brown ve Levinson'ın Evrensel Nezaket Modeli, HaroldPinter'ınBirthdayPartyve DumbWaiter, PamGems'inDusa, Fish, StasandVive LouisePage'inTissue adlı eserlerine uygulanmıştır. Bu tezinamacı, alıcıyı tehdit edici sözeylemler olarak, rica etme sözeylemleri icra edildiğinde, nezaket stratejilerinin edebi eserlerde kadınlar ve erkekler tarafından nasıl kullanıldığını incelemektir. Bu tezin diğer bir yönü ise yazarların, kadın ve erkek diline ait basma kalıpları eserlerinde yansıtıp yansıtmadıklarını bulmaktır. Ayrıca, sosyal konum, bireyler arası mesafe, ve zahmet derecesi gibi faktörlerin, nezaket stratejilerini tercih etmedeki etkisini keşfetmek amaç edinilmiştir. Bu amaçlar doğrultusunda, karakterler tarafından kullanılan425 rica belirlenip kim tarafından (kadın/ erkek); kime (kadın/ erken) kullanıldığı; kullanıcıların aralarındaki sosyal konum (eşit, fazla, az); bireyler arasındaki mesafe (yakın, orta, uzak); zahmet derecesi (yüksek, orta, düşük) olarak kodlanmıştır. Bu kodlama aşamasından sonra, bütün stratejilerin sıklığı ve oranı hesaplanıp gösterilmiştir. Sonuçlar göstermiştir ki, yüksek statülü kişiler, konuşmalarını hiçbir nezaket stratejisiyle düzenleme gereği hissetmemektedir. Eğer bireyler arası mesafe az ise, konuşmacı düz, kısa ve açık konuşmayı tercih etmekte. Zahmet derecesi yüksek olduğunda ise, konuşmacı muhatabın pozitif ve negatif yüzüne karşı daha duyarlı olmaktadır. Ayrıca sonuçlar göstermiştir ki, kadınların hem karşı cinse hem de aynı cinsiyete karşı daha dolaylı, kibar, uyumlu, ve hürmetkar bir dil kullanmaktadır. Kadınlar, hitap edilen kişinin pozitif ve negatif yüzüne daha çok saygı gösterirken, erkekler ağırlıklı olarak daha kayıtlı stratejiler tercih etmiştir. Bu nedenle, kadınlar, muhatabın istek ve ihtiyaçlarına ilgili oldukları kadar, daha eşit ve samimi dayanışma bağları oluşturmaya çalışmıştır.

In this thesis, Brown and Levinson's Universal Theory of Politeness Model is applied to four plays, which are Birthday Party and Dumb Waiter of Harold Pinter, Dusa, Fish, Stas and Vi of Pam Gems and Tissue of Louise Page. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how politeness strategies are handled by genders in literary texts when they perform requestive speech acts as face-threatening acts. Another aspect of the study is to find out whether the authors reflect the stereotypes of women's and men's language in their literary texts. Additionally, the effect of power, distance and the rank of imposition factors in the preference of politeness strategies is aimed to be explored. To these ends, 425 requests of characters are identified and coded according to who utters the request (female/male); to whom s/he utters (female/male); the power relationship between the participants (equal, high, low); the distance among participants (close, medium, far); the rank of imposition of the requests (high, medium, low). After this coding process, frequency and percentage of all use of bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record strategies in each play were counted and displayed. Results showed that higher status participants do not need to redress their speeches with politeness strategies. When the distance among H and S is small, S prefers to be direct, concise and clear. When the imposition is high, S tries to show concern to the positive and negative face of the addressee. Results also indicated that women use more indirect, polite, deferent and mitigated language both to same-gender and opposite-gender than men do. Although women show more respect to the positive and negative face of the addressee, men predominantly prefer to choose on-record strategies. Therefore, women try to create more equal and intimate solidarity ties, as they are concerned about the wants and needs of the addressee.
