Bulgular:Olguların yaş ortalaması 8.65±5.51 (min:0.5, maks:18) yıl bulunmuştur.Olguların %54,7'si erkek, %45,3'ü kız olarak bulunmuştur. Olguların TAT kullandığını ifade edenlerin yaş ortalaması 10.6 ± 5.42 iken, kullanmayanların yaş ortalamaları ise 7.9 ± 5.39 bulunmuş olup, aradaki fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur (p

Özet (Çeviri)

Aim: To find out the frequency of the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), the reason of the use of CAM and the effectiveness of these according to the patient's and family's thoughts, sociodemographic characteristics of the patients that use CAM, to identify the methods used and to find out whether the use of CAM is within the knowledge of the medical staff among the children that are being monitored with the diagnosis of cancer in Ankara University School of Medicine. Method: In this cross-sectional study, between 15February and 30 November 2015, 139 pediatric patients with cancer and their families (under the age of 18) from Ankara University School of Medicine, department of pediatric oncology were applied the survey form face-to-face which is prepared by the researchers. Findings: The average age for the cases was found to be 8.65±5.51(min:0.5, maks:18) years. 54.7% of the cases were male and 45.3% were female. The average age of those which claimed to be using CAM was found to be 10.6 ± 5.42, while the average age of those which didn't use CAM was found as 7.9 ± 5.39. The difference between these two averages was found statistically significant. The increase of the use of CAM as the age rises can be explained by the reason that big children are around the adolescent age group which puts them into the group of diseases that are harder to treat which is mostly like advanced stage bone tumors. Education level of parents that their child is older than 9 years old were found to be significantly lower and their monthly income was lower as well. Patients in this group with lower socioeconomic status were found to have a higher tendency towards the use of CAM. Of the cases, the ones at advanced stages were found to have increased frequency of the use of CAM.All of the patients participating this study have mentioned praying to cure their illness. Almost, 27% of the patients were using other CAM methods as well. The patients that used CAM mostly used honey (59.5%) which is followed by bee pollen/milk (56.8%) and molasses (%45.9). Almost 38 persent of the familieswere found to have applied for religious help for their patients. (hodja reading holy passages which are believed to be beneficiary to the patient). Also, 37.8% of the patients using CAM have consulted their doctor about the method they are using. When the reason of not consulting to doctors have been asked to those that didn't consult their doctor; 78.3% of them mentioned that they thought their doctor would give a negative response. Conclusion: About one third of the patients have been used CAM method besides praying. Also, it was found that all of the patients prayed for their illness and almost all of them felt relaxed psychologically due to their prayers. Most of these patients have been used CAM method without the knowledge of their doctors and, their reason to not to inform was that they thought their doctors would not approve it. We found that, non of the our patient, used CAM instead of theirmedical treatment. All of the patients that come to the pediatric oncology clinics must be questioned about the CAM usage status in detail. If the patients sufficiently informed in this matter, we think that usage of CAM methods instead of the medical treatment can be prevented.
