Özet

Bu tezde, ders kitapları söyleminin siyasi kimliğin bir dışavurumu olma gerçeğinden yola çıkılarak Türkiye Cumhuriyeti tarihinin farklı dönemlerinde okutulan lise tarih ders kitaplarındaki Avrupa kavramı incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın başında bu kavramın altı bileşeni siyasi bir varlık olarak Avrupa, Avrupalı insanlar, mekan, bilim-teknoloji-zenginlik, medeniyet ve değerler Avrupası olarak belirlenmiş ve Avrupa kavramının geçirdiği değişim bu bileşenler üzerinden incelenmiştir. Bu bileşenlerin altı farklı dönemde geçirdiği değişim bilgisayar destekli bir içerik analizi programı kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiş, karar alıcılar ve sivil toplum liderleri ile yapılan mülakatlar kullanılarak desteklenmiştir. Britanya, Yunanistan ve Güney ve Kuzey olmak üzere iki Kıbrıs toplumunun kullandığı kitaplar olmak üzere dört farklı vaka incelemesi daha yapılarak karşılaştırmalı bir boyut kazandırılmıştır. Sonuçlar göstermektedir ki Avrupa?nın antik çağlardaki tarihine verilen önem 1970li yıllardan sonra düşüşe geçmiş ve bu düşüş takip eden üç dönemde giderek belirgin hale gelmiştir. 2008 yılında yapılan reform Avrupa kavramın açısından değerlendirildiğinde bir önceki dönemin devamı niteliğindedir. Avrupa kavramının bugünkü yansıması Avrupa?nın kendini tanımladğının aksine demokrasi ve insan hakları gibi değerlerin öne çıktığı değil çok soyut ve modern siyasi bir kavram olarak tezahür etmektedir.

In this dissertation, the concept of Europe in different periods during the course of the Turkish Republic was analyzed based on the fact that the textbook discourse represents a reflection of the political identity of a country. The idea was to detect the change in this concept which at the beginning of the study was described to have six components; that of a political Europe, European people, space, science-technology-material well-being, civilization, Europe of values. Through an analysis of the concept of Europe among these dimensions across six periods of history textbooks was made possible by the use of computed assisted content analysis techniques and complimented by interviews by decision makers and civil society leaders. The dissertation had a comparative edge, looking at the concept of Europe in history textbooks of four other cases, that of Britain, Greece and two communities in Cyprus, North and South. The results demonstrated that the emphasis on ancient Europe decreased greatly after 1970s and the three periods of history textbooks after than. The current curriculum reform in 2008, is a mere continuation of the previous period with respect to the concept of Europe. The current representation of Europe is rather an abstract modern political entity than a value laden concept with an emphasis on democracy and human rights, the way Europe presents itself to Turkey in the accession process.
