Aim: Hypertension (HT) is the chronic disease most frequently encountered by family physicians in the outpatient clinic. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of education given to hypertensive patients and their relatives on the degree of compliance, awareness, blood pressures and lifestyles of patients Methods: Our study, planned as a randomized, controlled intervention study, was conducted in 2017 with 108 male patients who had been diagnosed with primary hypertension disease who applied to polyclinics. Patients were randomized into 56 patients as a case and 52 as a control group. Each patient's blood pressure (BP) was measured, a questionnaire surveying the attitudes, behaviors and supports of the spouses about treatment and patients' habits, and the Morisky Compliance Scale were filled. At the time of initial admission and every follow-up visits, all patients were given an written information guide which was prepared by following various guidelines. Verbal and visual education about HT was given. Patients were monitored for 3 months and an informative text message was sent twice a week to the mobile phone of the spouses of the patients in the case group during this process. At the end of the third month, all patients were re-measured for BP, and the questionnaires were reapplied. SPSS package program was used for the analysis and p <0.05 was considered significant Results: Both groups had similar age, spouse age, occupation, educational status, income levels, Body mass indexes (BMIs), BPs, alcohol and cigarette use levels, spousal support level and treatment compliance level. After education, 33% of the patients in the control group who were incompatible with the treatment and 100% of the patients who were not compliant with the treatment in the case group became compliant with the treatment. 3 patients in the control group and 4 patients in the case group completely stopped using alcohol. After the education program, it was observed that the alcohol use amounts tended to decrease in both groups. The number of patients who exercise regularly, increased from 21 to 32 in the control group and from 15 to 41 in the case group. In the case group, 4 patient were putting salt on meal without looking its taste, all of them left this behavior after the education. Both systolic BP and diastolic BP averages, daily salt usage and BMIs were significantly lower in both groups of patients, after the education. In terms of spouse support level there was no significant difference in the control group before and after the education, however in the case group after the education, the spouse support level increased significantly compared to the education. Conclusion : As a result, educating of patients and their spouses continuously in HT, has increased partner support, patient's awareness and treatment compliance. Alcohol, cigarette and salt consumption has reduced and it has triggered lifestyle changes in a positive way, such as regular exercise. In chronic illnesses such as HT, educating both patients and their relatives by their physician increases the treatment compliance of the patients.
