Continues growth in deforestation, industrialization and human activities have resulted in greenhouse gas emissions increase. And this situation has emerged the issue of global warming. Additionally, there is a growing demand in energy consumptions. And, the high dependency on fossil fuels to meet the increasing energy demand causes the risk of energy supply problem for the next years. In this situation, transportation sector can be considered as one of the main reasons. As they are mainly dependent on fossil fuels, their impact on increasing emissions, such as CO2 and NOx, is significantly high. On this basis, electric vehicles provide effective solutions to reduce the effect of these environmental issues. As electric vehicles use electricity as a source of energy, they have big potential to decrease the dependency on fossil fuels. However, electric vehicles also have some barriers, which avoids them to have mass market share in the automotive sector. Limited driving range, high purchasing cost, charging stations can be given as examples. On this basis, this project aims to focus on charging station technologies and charging station deployment strategies. The result of this research is likely to contribute developing more effective charging station deployment strategies. In this project, literature based approach has been adopted. And to answer the research question and objectives, cases studies were conducted. Observations obtained from the literature review chapter has helped to design proposed strategies evaluated in case studies. Additionally, secondary data, such as government publications, earlier research, and media information were collected to provide data to create case studies. Key findings in this research are that the availability of charging stations are fundamental for increasing the electric vehicle adoptions. However, the challenge in this situation is to determine the location, charging station type and level of incentives to be provided for charging station deployment plan. For instance, if charging station strategy propose great number of high-cost charging station and incentives, a financial risk may arise in terms of funding the investment. In contrast with this situation, waiting the EV increase to install more charging stations may cause a delay in accelerating the EV sales. So in this situation, it crucial to provide balance between charging stations and electric vehicles. Depending on the investigated area, the results of the evaluated charging station strategies have revealed that faster charging stations and higher level of incentives provided greater benefits in terms of EV increase. However, due to growth in benefits was not sufficient to cover increased costs, in terms cost-benefit value, this strategy did not provide advantageous results compared to same strategy in the same location but with slower charging station and no incentives.
